Taiwan is the newest member of the World Green Building Council (WorldGBC) and the latest nation to form a not-for-profit Green Building Council (GBC). Taiwan officially launched its Council on Friday 21 January 2005 and elected 21 board members including President Mr. Chiang Pi-Hsiao.
Taiwan has been an active adopter of sustainable development initiatives for over 13 years, initiating many activities following the Earth Summit 1992.
In 2001 Taiwan successfully launched the 'Green Building Promotion Program' providing resources, research, guidance, training, and education to support the adoption of green building initiatives in Taiwan.
These activities lead to the adoption of mandatory green building design criteria for all new official central government buildings in 2002, and local government buildings in 2003. To date, they have more than 500 buildings having either received certification as green buildings or awaiting certification.
The proactive Taiwan government initiated subsidies to improve the environmental performance for existing buildings called 'green remodelling'. From 2002 to 2003, twenty-eight green remodeling projects were completed for official buildings and public schools, for which the total budget was 260 million NT dollars. The green remodeling projects include a variety of initiatives including the installation of sun shading devices and ecological protection work such as constructed wetlands and wastewater treatment and reuse. ...
