Earth Sheltered Home at Deep Creek Lake, Maryland

Phil and Lisa Malone have an extraordinary house. Some of its features include earth shelter, passive cooling and heating, geothermal and cooling, and geothermal water heating. Conceived in '98 with construction finishing up in 2003, this was designed to be both energy-efficient and healthy for the occupants. They make a very valid point that many home designers forget to add preconditioned ventilation. In designing the mechanical system, they definitely produced some unique solutions.

Their site is full of detailed design and construction information and should be used as a reference for anyone interested in designing a house.
